Frequently Asked Questions

What percentage is deducted from gross salary?

Deductions vary depending on tax class, health insurance, and personal circumstances. On average, about 60-70% of gross salary remains as net. In tax class I with an average salary (approx. €3,500), it's about 64%.

What does "net to gross calculation" mean?

You enter your desired net salary (e.g. €2,500), and our calculator determines the required gross salary (approx. €3,700). Ideal for salary negotiations!

Are the 2026 calculations accurate?

Yes! We use the official tax formulas from the German Federal Ministry of Finance (§ 32a German Income Tax Act - EStG) and current 2026 social security contribution rates. The calculation corresponds to the official BMF wage tax calculator.

Why is church tax different in some states?

Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg levy 8% church tax, all other federal states 9% - calculated on income tax, not on gross salary.

What is the difference between tax class 3 and 5?

Tax class 3 is advantageous for the married partner with higher income (fewer deductions). The partner with lower income then chooses tax class 5 (higher deductions). The 3/5 combination is worthwhile when there's a large income difference between partners.
